I spent the better part of my adult working life with the job title of technical writer (or some variation). I spent much of that time as a freelancer and contractor. To keep pace with technology, I became an inveterate tinkerer,, so I kept a large web presence beyond my LinkedIn profile and website.
It’s finally time for me to change up my personal web presence:
My blogging on this site is getting more infrequent as the pandemic shutdown drags on. The big news this week is that Northern Virginia finally entered Phase 1 of recovery today. It’s a slight step to getting back to normalcy. The only big change is that I could go out to lunch today and eat outside. We must still wear masks. I’m still working at home.
Here are some highlights of my last week:
I was off Monday and Tuesday making it a short workweek but then again I spent my days off in my home office and living room which wasn’t much of a change over where I spend my work weeks these days.
I went to my first online meeting of the Good Docs Project and I feel good at the prospect of volunteering with them.
I wrapped up another TechTarget article and sent it to my editor.
While I won’t be completely happy until my gym reopens, it’s nice to see things in my area take a few steps forward finally.
I seem to spend so many of my waking days in Microsoft Office. When I get the chance, I like to switch it up and use another application for writing. After spending the last year using Dropbox Paper to write blog posts, I switched over to Google Docs and I’m finding out I like it.
It felt odd to take time off from work during the current quarantine, but I’m glad I did. My days off have been moving along fast. Then again, being in quarantine in solitary confinement screws with my concept of time.
Here’s how I spent my Sunday:
I watched some Kubernetes training videos on LinkedIn Learning after much procrastination
I did some edits on a personal writing project I plan to publish later in the week
Watched Dinner with the Gaffigans, a YouTube show I’ve grown to enjoy during the quarantine
Tomorrow is the unofficial start of summer. I’m usually spending this holiday weekend at the pool. My local area shut down right around the time I normally send in my membership fee for the summer. I held off on sending my check. It remains to be seen if my neighborhood pool or any pool in my local area will open at all this summer.
My headline says it all. I want a do-over for my start of summer 2020. It’s Memorial Day weekend. I took today off and spent the morning reading and spent some time on some personal writing projects in the afternoon that seem to always get blown off for billable work.
Here’s the rest of my Friday in review:
I slept in a bit late this morning because I had the day off from work.
My morning was spent on the couch reading for myself.
I snuck in some binge-watching of the season 3 of HBO’s West World.
Writing for myself felt good and I wish I could do it more often.
It’s not the start of the summer that I would like, but I’m rolling with the punches. Fortunately, I can also write for relaxation, which is what I’ll do this long weekend to pass the time.
