Hi! Thanks for reading my blog. My name is Will Kelly. I’m a senior technical writer based in the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area.
My current work involves content strategy and writing white papers, marketing collateral, and technical solutions content. In past technical writer lives, I developed online help, software development lifecycle (SDLC) documentation, user guides, operations guides and the other documents you’d expect to support product launches and major technology initiatives. In there, I also had a stint developing training courseware.
I’m also a published writer on topics such as DevOps, cloud computing, enterprise mobility, BYOD, and project management. My work has been published by SearchITOperations, DevOps Agenda, Mobile Business Insights, TechBeacon, TechRepublic and others.
My philosophy about the technical writing profession is that writers have to have some domain knowledge in the topic they are writing about. The idiot as a user advocate is an industry myth that has done more harm than good to the professions. Audiences are more sophisticated about technology these days. Besides many organizations are trying to do more with less so technical writers need to know more and do more to hold up their end of the project.
Along the way, I’ve developed an interest in online collaboration platforms and group chat applications. During my technical writing career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with platforms such as Office 365 and Atlassian Confluence to get my work done. Some of my lessons learned and insights about collaboration have become published articles over the years.
Outside of work, I try to hit the gym 5-6 times a week for circuit training. Being able to click off from the stress of the day is important to me.
