Through some previous contracts, I’ve gained experience interacting with administering SharePoint sites including managing document libraries, user access, creating lists and other site elements. In fact, I believe that today’s technical writer needs to be fluent in SharePoint site administration. During this time, I’ve inherited some SharePoint sites that made my job harder versus making me more productive. While SharePoint is becoming a standard for document version control and collaboration, a SharePoint site can work against such standards if it is poorly implemented. Some of my SharePoint  pet peeves are as follows:

1. No working search engine! Searching for documents on a SharePoint site without a functioning search engine is a drain on productivity and defeats one of the purposes of implementing SharePoint in the first place.
2.  Not being able to check a document out from a SharePoint site meaning I have to download the file through an old school way. This has happened to me with third-party hosted SharePoint sites versus SharePoint inside a firewall.
3. Irksome processes to create a new site or to add new features to an existing SharePoint site.

The bottom line is that you have to have a solid plan to deploy and maintain SharePoint in your organization in order to realize the return on investment and to make your users productive. What are your SharePoint site pet peeves?
